The Elephant Ear

Alocasia Portodora

It’s no surprise that the Alocasia Portodora is known as the Upright Elephant Ear, when the enormous wavy edged leaves - that resemble Elephant Ears - catch your eye immediately! This tropical plant comes to you in a 20cm plastic nursery pot (terracotta pot not included).

Please note that this plant only ships within Gauteng.

The Elephant Ear commands a lot of space, and its architectural appearance makes it an ideal focal point in any indoor space. Just imagine the attention that the dramatic arrow shaped leaves that point upwards from sturdy purple mottled stems, will get from visitors when placed in a prominent space in your home or office…

How The Elephant Ear Makes You Happy:

  • It is an air purifier, so this indoor plant creates a healthy, happy environment for you.
  • As a fast grower, the Elephant Ear will treat you with new leaves on a regular basis
  • Easy to care for. Enjoying your brightest spot and regular watering, your Elephant Ear will treat you to lush growth and genuine jungle attractiveness

Where The Elephant Ear is Happiest:

  • Hailing from a tropical environment, the Elephant Ear prefers bright light. It will also enjoy some direct sunlight.
  • Keep the air around it moist or place it in an already humid environment, like the bathroom or kitchen.
  • Mist regularly (with a spray bottle or mister) to enhance the moisture in the air around your Elephant Ear.
  • If you would like to increase the humidity around your Elephant Ear, you can also place it on a pebble filled tray of water to ensure the humid environment that this indoor plant needs to thrive.

Watering The Elephant Ear:

  • Keep the soil of your Elephant Ear moist at all times.
  • Avoid wet soil and the plant sitting in water constantly.
  • Water when the top 2cm of the soil in the pot has dried out and allow the water to run out the holes at the bottom of the pot.

Feeding The Elephant Ear:

  • Fertilise your Elephant Ear once every 2 weeks during Spring, Summer and Autumn (the growing season).
  • You can stop fertilising during Winter.

Care Tip:

  • Your Elephant Ear will start crying if you over water it. If drops of water are coming from the leaves, this indicates that the soil is too wet and you need to reduce watering.
